Change Management

Dec 11, 2011
Improving businesses through consulting services alone is challenging. It’s arguably not possible without the support of at least a few key players.

Sometimes creating change is tough and emotionally draining, it’s not for the faint hearted. Some business improvement consultants think they bring the change. The catalyst may be true, but in my opinion that’s only part of what is required to shift the status quo in a complex system.

I believe that lasting change occurs in organisations when enough of the team eventually want to be a part of the change. This is supported by the organisations opinion leaders. It takes a lot of personal effort and engagement to settle in the new world. Perhaps that’s why we continue to struggle with the issues around sustainability.

The change process isn’t always smooth or easy to see. It involves the decline of something old and the introduction of something new. As the old fades away people often get a sense of loss and can experience a form of grief. Is it any wonder people get so passionate and upset about changes?

Engaging a third party is beneficial to in the long run. I like to use workshops to break the ice and introduce new thoughts or perspectives in an open and inclusive environment. Finding change leaders is critically important.  They are never as clear to spot in normal workplace settings.

People benefit from being involved in the decisions for change, often they need to understand their part in the process and most importantly, why should I help?

One thing is for certain; when you invest in your people they will pay you back in often intangible ways.
